Which shade of Red is your Favorite Ferrari?

Ferrari Friday- a day set aside to ponder all things Prancing Horse. Some weeks it's classics, this week it's a modern day F458 Italia Wide Body. For this particular drawing I opted to do more of a stylized/conceptual illustration rather than something end to end with color to focus on the parts of the design then genuinely make it stand out. Another fun thing about the illustrations I do this way is it shows the entire process of the illustration on 1 sheet: From the rough red pencil sketch, to the refined line weighted areas, the marker block outs, airbrush transitions, and finally the hand painted details like the tail light and tire tread. To me this tells more of the story of not only the art, but the design, and can be tricky to pull off.

1966 Ferrari 275 Gtb Rendering

Over the weekend I got started on a sketch of a classic 66 Ferrari 275 Gtb- one of my personal favorites. I had originally intended to just do a rough sketch and save it for later, but couldn't resist breaking out the markers and airbrush. This was done using Sharpies, airbrushed Acrylics, and brushed Acrylics. This was a great opportunity for some great practice and a refresher course on some of the basics- it's nice to change things up a bit!

Ferrari Concept Car

Last weekend I broke out some new markers, pencils, and paper to make a fresh new rendering from scratch. This gave me the opportunity to practice some new technique with new materials. Years ago I did a bunch of Ferrari style concept cars since they are my favorite. I really wanted to try and render something red, so I thought this type of car would be a good start. I also wanted to try a view that I'm less comfortable with just for practice. Normally I'd draw a car with the front end on the left and work to the right- this time I did the opposite. The car itself is a mix of F360, F430, and F458 styling. I used a little bit of marker, chalk pastels, pencils, and acrylic paint for details. The only thing I didn't use that I normally would is an airbrush. This gave me the chance to practice some other mediums so that later I can use the airbrush more efficiently.

Ferrari F-50 Rendering

This one's an olde but goode. I started drawing cars in the 6th grade and pretty much never stopped. This particular F-50 I started in high school and finished the coloring about a year after graduating. This is back when I was doing everything in pencil and colored pencil and I was learning to use multiple versions of the same color. Now it's much easier to achieve smooth gradations and color transitions using an airbrush- but we all started somewhere. This was the last colored pencil drawing I did... the shop I worked at at the time was where I began airbrushing. Fortunately, this one has a home an a wall at my friend Alix's house   :)
