"Bot-Rods": A New Addition to the Art Line Up

Well hello, blog friends! Let me start by saying I know it's been a while since the last post, but there was indeed a good reason for it; it seems for the last 4 months any attempt to create a post with photos didn't seem to work. I have no idea why, despite doing research on the issue, and then all the sudden it works. That's cool, I'll take it!

Alright, to the purpose of today's post:

Although we have a lot of catching up to do from... February?? Seriously! I'd like to start with something recent and fun. I've been starting to include my robot character artwork in to more artwork this past year and in the past few weeks had experimented with a new approach to that inclusion. Where previously I had been doing the Robot Artwork as it's own thing using a separate color palette, tools, and styles, recently I decided to re-approach it from my traditional illustration format using the tools, techniques & style that I am most familiar and comfortable. To my surprise, it went quite well! I mean, I guess I shouldn't be so surprised, but it felt like a refreshing way to combine the way I do illustrative car renderings with the Robot artwork that I enjoy so much. And so a traditional mix of Markers, Inks, Acrylics, and Airbrushing make up the examples shown here- some of my most favorite tools. The result of using the more familiar techniques allows me to get my concepts down quicker and cleaner as well as appease both my Hot Rod loving fans an
d my want to cross over in to the more 'story telling' side of things (which I generally feel is stronger with a character). This crossover lets me explore both the Car Design side of things in a traditional way, as well as add some flair to the artwork in a story telling way. I've got lots more to learn and explore in this method to really find a strong effective balance, but I look forward to sharing lots more "Bot-Rods"!

Kustom 49 Ford Shoe Box & Ferrari F40 Original Art

It's been an awesome week this past week as my wife and I have been having profound conversations about some direction changes with artwork and our business as a whole. All good things, I promise- a lot of reflecting (which I highly recommend making time for). The really great thing about looking back at times is how it can help you look forward- in this case some of our new ideas are based on refining older ones. But I digress! Since we spent a lot of time talking about about art, I gave myself some space to create my own ideas every day this past week instead of what we had planned. The result was something in the neighborhood of 5 or 6 original pieces, 1 of which was a painting on canvas that I am really looking forward to sharing. Among the new artwork is the 2 drawings  above: the Kustom 49 Ford ShoeBox (done using pencils, ink, & gouache on 11x17 paper), and the Ferrari F40 Design Compilation (done using pencils & gouache on 11x17 paper)- both of which illustrate not only some of my favorite designs, but layouts and techniques I personally really enjoy. Out of all the artwork I made and shared this past week, these 2 are the only remaining available originals I have left- if you're interested in owning one of these original drawings please check them out at:

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Happy St. Patrick's Day! What a great excuse to share something green and give some love to the air cooled cars like this 66 Corvair Fastback concept from a little while back. I'm actually quite an air cooled enthusiast- I have a 69 Vw roadster as a daily driver and own 2 Corvairs. I really love the styling of the Corvair's and am always considering options for if I were to modify one of mine. Originally done using Markers & Airbrushed acrylics on Marker Paper.

Carry on with St. Patricksy things.

For Truck Tuesday we've just added a new print at a new size- the custom 1953 Ford F100 is now available as a standard print size of 8.5"x11".

The orignal rendering was done using markers & airbrushed acrylics on marker paper.

Quick Sketch & Render to Start the day: Grey Ghost/Hot Rod

Most mornings start out with a quick sketch of some sort, and most days I go ahead and render it as well to get my mind in the right set for the day. Today I'll be working on a grey car, so I thought this would be a good opportunity to warm up in the field of tones/colors I'll be working with later.

Markers/Airbrush on 11"x17" Marker Paper

NEW Chevy C10 Artwork & Prints

I've been away from the studio a few weeks working at a shop rebuilding the motor to my daily Vw Roadster- thankfully the guys there helped me out a ton in getting it all squared away and now the car is super awesome! So now that I'm home I'm getting some fresh ink down on the pages. A couple weeks ago I sketched up this 69 C10 and finally had a chance to render it recently. Many small touches and detail changes make for a clean custom, but the stance, wheels and slight roof chop really make the difference. Markers & Airbrushed Acrylics on Marker Paper, Prints available at:

I also have the Original available, please email me for details:

Throw Back Thursday- Lifted Chevy Truck Edition

For ‪#‎TBT‬ here's a digital rendering I did while back of one of the few lifted trucks I've done. With the deadline for this build submission only 12 hours from the point I got final details, no art stores were open to get the inks I'd need. To meet the deadline I did it this way- much coffee was involved.

1973 Toyota Corona Wagon Rendering

Well this was a fun one over the weekend- Went to a good friend of mines house on Saturday to find that he had bout a 73 Corona Wagon which is in fact pretty sweet. I happen to have brought my new drawing tablet with me so I knocked out a sketch and added some color per his ideas. I rarely do a lot of digital artwork, but with the amount of traveling I do these days having something like this is freaking fantastic- the marker/pen/airbrush tools work incredibly with with the style and techniques I already use, and I can do it anywhere very quickly.

1st Drawing of the Day- Camaro Under Hood Version 2

1st drawing of the day is this Camaro under hood layout version 2- The builder made some design changes from the previous version and wanted a fresh render. Since I wasn't allowed to fling paint at this one I got extra carried away with lights instead to give it some action. Markers/Airbrush/Acrylics on Marker Paper. On to the next one!

Custom 32 Ford Roadster Rendering

About a month ago I was preparing to do a a few silver/grey vehicle renderings  back to back and wanted to test out some materials together. I often do a 'test piece' prior to a full on piece to make sure that the markers and paints I've selected work well together on the surface I'm going to use. This 32 was the combination of a few idea's I'd had for a custom roadster, but was also a great opportunity to test out those materials. This piece was done using markers and airbrushed acrylics on paper, then I picked up a frame for it and hand pinstriped it with tan to match the interior. It was a whole lot of fun to put together and I got to learn a lot from it- I'll take any excuse to draw a custom car!

The original piece is available at www.PinstripeChris.com/Store
